Urban Outreach is one of Bolton's best-known charities. Established in 1990, it works across the borough to support people facing poverty, homelessness and other complex challenges. Although it is a Christian charity, its services are available to anyone in need, regardless of background.

Located in the heart of one of the country's most economically disadvantaged communities, UCS Bolton is committed to ensuring students not only achieve academic success but also develop values such as kindness, responsibility and loyalty. The food collection reflects the school's focus on developing confident, caring young people who want to make a positive contribution to their community.

The appeal was organised by the school's Charity Champions, a student group dedicated to supporting charitable causes. They led assemblies, created posters and encouraged donations from students, staff and families throughout the campaign.

In total, 1,058 items were collected, including tinned food, pasta and other essential cupboard staples, which have been donated to Urban Outreach's food bank.

One of the most notable aspects of the appeal was the generosity shown by individual students. Some even used their own pocket money to buy food specifically for the collection, showing their willingness to help others in their local community.

Headteacher Ian Barry said:
"We are incredibly proud of our Charity Champions and every member of our school community who contributed to this appeal. At UCS Bolton, we believe education is about developing character as well as achievement. Our students have shown they understand the importance of supporting others, and this incredible response reflects the values we strive to demonstrate every day. Their generosity will make a meaningful difference to families across Bolton."

Naomi Harrison, Head of Attendance and coordinator of the school's charity work, added:
"Our students continue to amaze us with their kindness and willingness to help others. The Charity Champions have worked exceptionally hard to promote the appeal, and the support from our families and staff has been outstanding. Collecting more than a thousand food items is a fantastic achievement, but what makes me most proud is the compassion and selflessness our students have shown throughout the campaign."

Urban Outreach has thanked the school for its donation, which will help provide essential food and support for local families facing difficult circumstances.

Year 9 Charity Champion Aleesha said:
"We are very proud of what our school community has achieved. Everyone came together to help people who may be struggling, and we hope the donations will make a real difference."

The campaign is another example of how UCS Bolton places its values at the heart of everything it does, encouraging students to become active citizens who understand the importance of giving back to their community.

UCS Bolton is a secondary school and sixth form college located on Deane Road in Bolton. As one of only 44 University Technical Colleges in the country, it specialises in science, health science, engineering and mathematics. Employer engagement is central to the student experience, with more than 50 employer partners helping prepare students for life beyond the classroom.
